Wedding Invitation Tips
3: How do I Choose a Wedding Theme?
Before you even think about choosing your Wedding Invitations your need to think about your wedding theme. Every wedding needs a theme so that you can base all of the elements of your day around it. If you don't you'll get lost in a sea of mismatched stationery, flowers and decor. But don't panic, I'll take you through the basics.
Who are You as a Couple?
The very first step is to consider who you are as a couple. This will ultimately affect the whole theme of your wedding. Sit down with your partner and write a list of all the things that you like, all the places you have been that bring back happy memories, all of the films that you have seen or songs that you love. Is there anything unique or poignant that you feel could relate well as a wedding theme? This can then be expanded into your invitations.
Does this seem like too much hard work or is there just too much to consider? Go simpler - do you just like a colour? Do you have a favourite flower? Do you like a certain period in time? ANYTHING can be turned into a theme. Maybe your venue will help to reflect a theme - are you getting married in a stately home with lots of history you could use? Or is it in a converted barn where you could incorporate some rustic elements?
Ideally you want to choose a venue that reflects your personalities, but if this isn't possible then use your invitations to do this instead.
Theme Ideas
If you're struggling, I've listed a few broad themes below that you can then add your own personal touches to.
Romantic/Fairytale Wedding Theme

A classic theme that has stood the test of time. If you are getting married in a large stately home and envisage lots of sparkles and flowers, then this could be the theme for you.
Think arriving in a carriage or a fancy car, walking through a room filled to the brim with beautiful fresh flowers, a three course sit down meal, long flowing bridesmaid dresses, top hats and tails, chandeliers and champagne flutes.
The Romantic/Fairytale Wedding can become quite costly with all the fancy elements adding up.
Rustic/Outdoors Wedding Theme

If you are getting married in a converted barn, a farm house or a pub, then a Rustic Wedding Theme could be perfect for you.
Fairy lights hung up to light the way, lots of wood everywhere, huge jars of wild flowers, lace trims, chalkboards and candles, lots and lots of candles - all of these are classic elements of the rustic themed wedding. Think homely, think warm, think beautiful.
A rustic themed wedding can be extremely affordable if you're a dab hand at DIY and have the time to save up jam jars and random pieces of material.
Vintage Wedding Theme

Vintage Weddings have always been popular. Vintage can refer to many eras in time, but when it comes to weddings they tend to focus on two eras - the 1920's and the 1940's.
For a 1920's Vintage Themed Wedding, think flapper skirts, Great Gatsby, geometric designs, glass and lots of black and gold.
For a 1940's Vintage Themed Wedding, think sepia, old papers, telegrams, newspapers, ration books, and textual materials like lace.
Bohemian Wedding Theme

The Bohemian theme has really taken off over the last few years, with lots of couples striving for a wedding that appears more relaxed and easy going.
With stunning bright and earthy colours mixed together, think lose flowers tied together with ribbon, cushions, printed rugs, outdoorsy, candles, ribbons, drapes, trees, grass and an informal help your self of charcuterie and bubbles.
Country Themed Wedding

Do you love outdoors, love the smells, love the fresh air, love the flowers? Then a Country themed wedding could be perfect for you.
Add elements of floral to your invitations, fill your venue with freshly picked flowers, add some haybales, put up some floral bunting, or even hold your ceremony outside or in a large tent in a field. Think elegance and relaxed comfort.
Wedding Theme Dos & Dont's
Don't Forget Your Theme
Whatever you do DON'T FORGET YOUR THEME. When you are shopping (and by shopping I mean scrolling Pinterest or Google) for wedding ideas, you will get distracted and swayed by other themes. Other people might try to lead you down a different path. You can't have everything as it won't all fit together. At the very start of your process make sure you write down what your theme is and what the overall feel is you are looking for, and constantly refer back to it to make sure you're on track.
Work Together
It's very common for one half the couple to take the lead on the wedding planning. But do make sure you check in with your partner at every step, just to ensure you're not getting carried away.
Don't Go Over The Top
This is a tricky one to manage, because you will undoubtedly want everything to match and everything to be co-ordinated, but try to look at your wedding as a whole. Keep the large aspects, like furniture simple and neutral, and add your theme through the finishing touches.
